Advice to Incoming Freshman

North Hills High School
Hannah Billing

If you’re like me, going to high school meant finally getting older and having more responsibilities. But it also was scary and the school is so much bigger than the middle school. As a junior, I think I have the high school experience down. Here are my top 5 pieces of advice for incoming freshmen!

1. Don’t Be Afraid to Make New Friends
I know we all have our childhood best friends, but make sure you branch out. Making new friends that are in your classes is super important. You always have someone to talk to, and it makes even the hardest and most boring class fun!

2. Form Good Relationships with Your Teachers
You always want to have a solid relationship with your teachers. They are perfect resources for help, or even just someone to talk to. Even though college is probably the last thing on your mind right now, forming these foundations now can help with letters of recommendation.

3. Get Organized
While organization might mean different things to different people, making sure you have a system that works for you is essential to surviving high school. For me, I use a calendar to keep track of my assignments. I also keep all my work in color coded folders to make sure I don’t lose anything. For you, that might mean using a planner or taking notes for every class. Make sure you get a system down so you aren’t scrambling to keep track of everything.

4. Stay Involved!
Our high school has so many different clubs, activities, and sports. There is something for everyone! We have a club and activity day during all lunch periods during the first week of school. Make sure you walk around and take advantage of this opportunity. (Join Journalism Club!)

5. Prioritize Self Care
School is very important, but so is mental health. Please put yourself first! Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Yes, deadlines are important, but so is keeping yourself well rested. Take breaks, and reach out if you need help. The high school has so many resources to help you!

Make sure you keep these helpful tips in mind whenever you start your high school career! You are going to do amazing things!
