Welcome to Meet the Marcher, where I interview members of the Marching Band during the band season! Today's star is none other than the Drum Major herself, Parker Pile!

What is your name? Parker Pile

What grade are you in? 12th

What instrument(s) and/or role do you play within the marching band? Drum Major

How many years have you been in the marching band? 5

Why did you choose to participate in the marching band?

I played clarinet in band class and all my friends were joining, so I joined as well!

How do you prepare for marching band?

I make sure I have my water, cleats, baton and whistle, I warm up and stretch, and then the seniors all have a quick talk for what we want to do that evening.

What is your favorite song to conduct, play, march, or dance to in the current show? Why?

I love dancing in “Let’s Groove” from our Radio Show and marching countermarch in our March Show! Conducting is a lot of fun, but I love being down on the field with all my friends.

Of all the shows you have participated in, which is your favorite show of all time? Why?

Jam Show since it was from my rookie year – it’s super nostalgic!

Of all the songs you’ve played in marching band, which is your favorite song of all time?

“Lean on Me” by Bill Withers! It’s such a beautiful song, and the band captures it so well.

What is your favorite memory during your time in the marching band?

During a summer band practice in the parking lot, it started downpouring and we all danced in the rain!

What is your favorite part of being in the marching band overall? Why?

The people I do it with; I love all of them so much. Also, it’s remarkable how much I’ve learned about life through the program.

What is your favorite paper plate award? Please provide an explanation of the award.

My freshman year, my two friends and I got the “Three Musketeers Award” because we were always together!

What will you miss the most about the North Hills marching band?

The people and the positive environment for sure.

Do you plan on continuing your participation in marching band in college, whether it be to help the North Hills band or to participate in your college’s band? Why or why not?

It depends, honestly! I haven’t decided, but I know for sure that I’d like to come back and help with the North Hills band since it means a lot to me.

Do you enjoy being the drum major? What is your favorite part about it? Why?

Yes! I love being able to support people and help them reach their full potential. I’ve met so many cool people from all grades and all sections, and getting to know them and watching them grow is so fulfilling. Yes, I could have a similar experience even if I wasn’t the drum major, but the position puts me in a different perspective to learn and see things I wouldn’t otherwise see. I’m very blessed.

What are your responsibilities as the drum major?

Leading the way, setting a good example, helping others, and spreading love :)

How do you handle the responsibility of leading the band?

I have a lot of friends that support me, and even if it feels like a lot of pressure, I always have fun and know that they have my back!

Did the previous drum major inspire you? How so?

Absolutely. Sally Doubet was such a huge source of encouragement, and I wouldn’t be here without her hard work, passion, and support.

What advice would you have for the next drum major?

The year isn’t over yet, so I can’t give a certain answer, but I’d definitely tell them to be themselves and always share how much they love and care for the people around them. Time moves so fast, so always take your chance.

Thank you, Parker Pile, for this wonderful interview! The band is very lucky to have you, and good luck during the rest of the season.
