North Hills seniors attend mock crash day before prom

Today, Friday, May 1, North Hills seniors watched on as their peers took part in a mock crash.

The mock crash is an event held by the high school's SADD club, presenting seniors with the life altering decisions that come from the effects of drunk and distracted driving. The crash, which is played out in real time, involves first-responders arriving at the scene. This includes paramedics, local police, and fire departments.

Michelle Medic, SADD’s sponsor, speaks about the event and why she decided to establish the mock cash. 

“The mock crash was created to educate the youth about making good decisions. I find if we can do something to impact them it’ll construct a long lasting impact and life lesson. One decision can alter your life and your family's life.”  

Students are also a vital part of the crash. Seniors Ella Crowley and Noelle Copanzzi are two members of SADD’s executive board. They are also participating in the mock crash, as two of the female “victims."

Ella Crowley’s role was being in the car the drunk driver, Cody Miller, hit. Whenever asked why she wanted to participate in the event, Crowley reflected on her decision. 

“I want to help spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. It’s one thing to hear about why it is bad but it’s another to physically watch it happen.”

Noelle Copanzzi has the most vital role in the crash, the victim who dies. Copanzzi believes it is important for herself and her peers to be educated on this topic.

“I think it’s important for people to be educated about drunk driving that can end fatally for yourself or others. You're not only putting yourself at risk but everyone else on the road. It is an incredibly selfish choice.” 

The Class of 2026 took away an important life lesson from the mock crash and will now reflect and think before they make any life altering decisions leading into prom weekend, and their futures.
